Drainage Improvements Underway in Yelarbon
Drainage improvement works are now underway in Yelarbon, delivering practical upgrades aimed at improving water flow and reducing pooling around Council water infrastructure in the township.

The works follow the presentation of new drainage mapping to the Yelarbon Community Consultative Committee (CCC) earlier this year. The mapping has provided Council with an up to date understanding of how water moves through the town and supports ongoing efforts to address drainage concerns that have been raised by the community.
Goondiwindi Regional Council Mayor, the Honourable Cr Lawrence Springborg AM said the project demonstrates Council’s commitment to working with the community to help them understand the challenges, as well as identify and deliver practical solutions.
“Improving drainage in Yelarbon has been an important priority raised through the Community Consultative Committee, and I’m pleased to see these works now underway,” Mayor Springborg said.
“One of the biggest challenges in Yelarbon is the incredibly flat terrain. In some locations, the natural ground fall is as little as 0.14 millimetres per metre. To put that into perspective, something as simple as a tyre track or footprint can have more influence on where water flows than the natural landscape itself.”
The challenge is further complicated by the area’s clay soil, which limits the rate at which water can soak into the ground following rainfall events.
As part of the project, Council is concreting selected areas around drainage infrastructure to improve fall rates, encourage water movement and reduce build up from debris and grass. This complements recent street grading works around the Yelarbon township.
“Good drainage is something many people only notice when it isn’t working.
“There is no single fix for drainage in a town with conditions like Yelarbon, but these works represent a practical improvement that will help water move more efficiently through the existing network,” Mayor Springborg said.
Council will continue to work with the Yelarbon CCC on matters of community priority. All residents are welcome at these meetings, with the next meeting on 1 December at 5.30pm at the Anglican Church Hall.
The current works are expected to continue over coming weeks, weather permitting.
