Councils call for state support on overburdened local roads; reliable 4G coverage

At the recent Darling Downs South West Council of Mayors meeting, we continued work on a strategic road framework for the broader region. This plan will strengthen our advocacy to the state government for greater investment in our vital transport routes. This follows my discussions with the Minister and Director-General in Goondiwindi a few months ago.

Roads are the lifeblood of our region - supporting freight, logistics, emergency services, residents, and visitors alike - and while we’re starting to see some progress with additional funding, there remains a long way to go to address years of underinvestment by the state and commonwealth governments.

At the Local Government Association of Queensland annual conference, councils also very strongly supported a motion for the state government to consider assuming responsibility for key local council roads that are now carrying state-level traffic. Often, this is a consequence of the local road becoming a preferred route for state and national highway users, due to the condition of those highways. This increased traffic then furthers the wear and damage to local roads, reducing safety for local residents. These roads were never funded or designed for that level of demand, and it’s vital that state investment reflects their new strategic importance.

The state of regional telecommunications also remains a major concern following the disastrous 3G network shutdown, which has led to reduced 4G service across much of our area – despite the insistence from major providers to the contrary. The Council of Mayors is working collectively to press for urgent action to restore reliable coverage and ensure that regional communities are not left behind. Connectivity is not a luxury - it’s essential for safety, business, and everyday life.

Leading regional advocacy: stronger, lasting benefits for renewable host towns

In a similar vein, I’m pleased to share that I have been appointed by the Council of Mayors to lead regional advocacy for improved benefits to local communities hosting renewable energy projects.

Across Australia, it’s become abundantly clear that while small towns often are the hosts of these large-scale developments, they see little lasting gain post the significant construction phase. The energy may be produced in those communities, but the benefits too often flow elsewhere.

While we recognise the positive legislative changes introduced by the state government earlier in 2025, our focus is on ensuring these reforms deliver real, tangible outcomes for affected communities. Towns that host renewable projects should share meaningfully in the rewards - through infrastructure and community investment that endures well beyond the construction phase.

In recent discussions with the Deputy Premier and the State Planner, I reinforced that these projects should be genuine catalysts for local economic growth. These projects should not only power the grid - but also grow the broader economies of the communities that make them possible. I’m enthusiastic about leading this body of work.

Successful advocacy secures return of local police to Talwood

I’m very pleased to share the welcome news that a Queensland Police Service officer will be stationed in Talwood from this month. This outcome follows strong advocacy from Council and will be warmly welcomed by the community. I also want to thank the Talwood Community Consultative Committee for continually raising this matter on behalf of their community. Talwood has been without a locally based officer for more than a year. Having a dedicated police presence back in town will strengthen community safety, provide reassurance for residents, and help ensure timely support for local issues. I’d also like to thank the Queensland Police Service for recognising the importance of this appointment and for their ongoing partnership in supporting our regional communities.

New fire truck strengthens local fire brigade

On Saturday morning, I had the pleasure of attending the handover of a new high clearance fire truck to the Goondiwindi Fire Brigade by our Local State Member James Lister MP. It was great to spend time with the local firefighters, their families and senior officers from the Queensland Fire Department and see firsthand the dedication and professionalism they bring to keeping our community safe.

The new truck, delivered on behalf of the Queensland Government, will make a real difference in supporting the brigade as they respond to emergencies. I’m delighted to see investments like this in our local emergency services, to ensure Goondiwindi’s brigade is well-equipped and ready to protect our community when it matters most.

Preparedness and partnership – agencies unite to stay ready this disaster season

Many parts of the region were fortunate to receive some much-needed rain last week after an extended hot and dry run beforehand. It was a welcome relief and also quite timely, as the Local Disaster Management Group also met to review disaster preparedness, planning updates, and seasonal forecasts ahead of our higher-risk season.

These meetings, held around twice a year, bring together key agencies including the SES, Queensland Fire and Rescue, Queensland Ambulance Service, Queensland Police Service, Care Goondiwindi, and others to ensure our community remains well-prepared for emergencies. Weather conditions are generally unpredictable and, while we can’t control the elements, we can control our preparation. Council continues to lead local disaster planning and response efforts, working closely with our partner agencies to keep our community safe.

Community discussions strengthen Yelarbon safety

Along with other Councillors, I attended a community safety meeting at the Yelarbon Memorial Hall on Saturday, where residents discussed concerns about recent crime in the area. The meeting provided an opportunity for residents to raise issues directly with the Queensland Police Service and learn about preventative measures. It’s encouraging to see the community taking an active role in keeping their town safe, and I urge everyone to stay vigilant, report suspicious behaviour, and lock up. Thank you to local Yelarbon resident Denice Brown for organising the meeting.

Supporting community sport: upgrades complete at Inglewood Aquatic Centre

I’m pleased to share that construction of a new storage shed and undercover area at the Inglewood Aquatic Centre was completed earlier this season. The upgrade provides much-needed storage and a shaded space to support events such as the swimming carnival. We’re proud to continue supporting this important community asset, which plays a vital role in squad training, learn-to-swim programs, and public swimming. Inglewood has a fantastic and supportive swim community, and I hope this adds even more value for all who enjoy the pool.

Volunteers making a vital difference for our visitors

Last week, I attended the Goondiwindi Visitor Information Centre (VIC) steering committee meeting, where we discussed feedback from visitors and our wonderful volunteers. Our VIC volunteers are a shining example of community and Council working together, generously giving their time to assist visitors and share invaluable local knowledge.

Feedback from the meeting confirmed that it has been a strong season so far, with many visitors praising the town’s tidiness - a point of pride for all residents. A huge thank you to the more than 20 dedicated volunteers whose efforts help promote our region and ensure visitors enjoy a memorable experience.
