Inglewood State School Intermediate Boys Have A Blast!
From the first ball that rocketed past our ears, our Inglewood SS Intermediate Boys team (Year 9/10) knew there wasn’t going to be an easy ride in this competition.
Multiple hours spent in training would all come to the fore at the Queensland Volleyball Intermediate Schools’ Cup Tournament and from the start, the boys were going to need every shot in their arsenal to have any chance at victory.
The 3-day competition at the Gold Coast is a much anticipated event in our school calendar and the boys had been training furiously in the lead-up. Serving, spiking, blocking and passing skills had all been honed and the only thing left to learn was game play. Thankfully, this competition served that up in bucket-loads so the boys were certainly tired but euphoric by the end of the event.
In these sorts of competitions, the on-court learning trajectory is high but so too, is the off-court s kills t hat need development. How to listen to your coach, how to pick your mate up when he feels down, how to focus your own skills and get back to basics whenever your own abilities seem to have fled out the window and most importantly, how to put your own personal goals aside for the needs of the team– all of these create a great team culture and coachable players, something this team had in spades.
We fought hard, won a game and lost narrowly in every other set so the boys are older, wiser and hungry for more. We’re looking forward now to the Beach Schools’ Cup event coming up soon. This event was re scheduled from earlier in the year when the cyclone hit the Coolangatta beach. Hopefully, the only cyclone on the beach this time will be our boys!
Enormous thanks to our parent supporters (who keep our students playing at their best), our P&C (who support us with team nominations) and our school (who supports our time away at carnivals). We couldn’t do any of it without them!
