Opening of “Near and Far” photographic exhibition

The Texas Regional Art Gallery launched its 2026 exhibition program on Saturday with the opening of 'Near and Far', a photographic exhibition by three Stanthorpe-based artists. An intimate group of locals and art lovers gathered to mark the occasion, setting a warm and reflective tone for the gallery’s first exhibition of the year.

'Near and Far' brings together images drawn from the photographers’ extensive personal archives, exploring the deep connection between home and travel. From familiar Granite Belt landscapes to distant and unexpected places, the exhibition reflects a shared love of observing the world closely—whether just outside the back door or across the globe.

Sandra McEwan’s work traces a visual journey from the unique beauty of the Granite Belt to the dramatic landscapes of New Zealand. She describes photography as an art form that weaves together “the head, heart and eye,” with each image inviting viewers to feel as well as see the world around them.

Adrian Ashman, who has been taking photographs since childhood and exhibiting since 2003, presents images that spark memories of the unexpected. His photographs are less about fixed moments and more about the emotions and associations they awaken, highlighting what he calls the quiet miracle of photography and the human mind.

Keith Barnett’s contribution focuses on nature’s detail, from flora and fauna to geology. His images encourage viewers to slow down and notice the textures, colours and light that are so often overlooked in everyday life.

'Near and Far' runs at the Texas Regional Art Gallery until 13 March.
