Passing of Queensland Cross-Border Commissioner Ian Leavers
It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Queensland Cross-Border Commissioner, Ian Leavers.

Ian was not only an exceptional professional but also a personal friend and great mate. Having worked closely with him for over 20 years, I witnessed firsthand his deep commitment to public service and his remarkable ability to lead with integrity, strength, and compassion.
Across his career, Ian excelled in everything he turned his hand to. His 15 years as President of the Queensland Police Union was, in itself, an extraordinary contribution. He was deeply dedicated to his police family — pragmatic, considered, and unwavering in his advocacy for Queensland Police Service members. Ian stood by them through their darkest days, particularly in times of tragedy, offering steadfast support and leadership when it was needed most.
In 2024, Ian was appointed as Queensland’s first Cross-Border Commissioner — an inspired decision by the Miles Government, later recognised by the Crisafulli Government through his elevation to report directly to the Premier. In a year, Ian engaged with hundreds of border residents — not only here in Goondiwindi but across the Queensland, New South Wales, and Northern Territory borders. Through his compassion, dedication, and genuine care, he was already making a meaningful difference in tackling long-standing cross-border challenges that had frustrated communities for decades.
Ian’s passing is a tremendous loss — to his family, his many friends, and to the communities he served with such heart. He will be sorely missed.
