Police Remembrance Day 2025: Honouring the Fallen

Monday, 29 September 2025 will mark National Police Remembrance Day, a day to honour and remember police officers who have lost their lives while serving their communities.

Across Queensland and Australia, the day is observed with memorial services and quiet moments of reflection. It serves as a solemn reminder of the risks police officers face every day and the sacrifices made in the line of duty.

“The sacrifice made by officers who have lost their lives in service to our community is never forgotten.”

Established in 1989, National Police Remembrance Day honours not only those killed in the line of duty, but also police officers whose deaths were not duty-related but who are remembered as valued members of the policing community.

While there will be no formal march or vigil held locally residents are encouraged to take a moment to pause and reflect perhaps even observing a minute’s silence or wearing a blue ribbon in support.

The main state service will take place at the Queensland Police Memorial in Brisbane’s Botanic Gardens. Other commemorations will be held in locations across the state, from the Gold Coast to the Torres Strait and in many regional communities.

“National Police Remembrance Day is an opportunity for family members to pay their respects to officers killed on duty, as far back as the beginning of the Queensland Police Force in 1864.”

Since 2022, full-scale services and gatherings have resumed following the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Support for the families of fallen officers continues through organisations such as Police Legacy, which provides practical and emotional assistance to those left behind.

A fundraising page has also been set up to support the families affected by recent tragedies, including the victims of the Porepunkah shootings. Donations can be made at www.policelegacyvic.org.au
