Remembrance Day – Texas

Locals and visitors gathered at 11am on November 11th at the Texas Cenotaph in Avon Street for a Remembrance Day service honouring all who have served and sacrificed for Australia.

Glen Gibson opened the service on behalf of the Stanthorpe and Texas RSL Sub Branches and recited the Ode. Bugler Mr Darren Uhlmann then played The Last Post, followed by one minute of silence, before sounding The Rouse.

In his address, Mr Gibson reflected on the meaning of the day and the courage of the men and women of Australia’s Navy, Army and Air Force. He spoke of their belief in something greater than themselves and their willingness to serve—qualities that continue to define them as heroes in our nation’s story.

He acknowledged the first ANZACs, whose bravery established traditions still honoured today, and paid tribute to the generations who followed in their footsteps. Mr Gibson recognised those who served in the Second World War, as well as in Korea, Borneo, Malaya, Vietnam, United Nations missions, and more recent operations in East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan. He also took a moment to acknowledge Australians currently serving both at home and overseas.

“Let us this day remember the sacrifices of our brothers and sisters,” he said, honouring those who now rest in places such as Gallipoli, Palestine, Flanders Fields, El Alamein, New Guinea, Greece and Crete. He reaffirmed the community’s commitment to carrying the legacy passed down by those who served: “The torch you threw us we caught, and now our hands will hold it high.”

Wreaths were then laid by Mr Les Fletcher on behalf of the Stanthorpe RSL Sub Branch and Mr Vince Clegg representing the Texas RSL Sub Branch. Ms Jackie Large, Treasurer of the Stanthorpe Women’s Auxiliary, followed, before Texas School Captains Matthew Doherty and Brock Dawson laid a wreath on behalf of the staff and students.

The service concluded with the Soldier’s Prayer and the National Anthem, after which attendees gathered at the Texas Bowls Club for light refreshments.
