Texan Shines on Origin Stage
Texas had plenty of reasons to be proud last Thursday after one of their own, Mia Byrnes, helped Queensland defeat New South Wales 34-12 in the Under 19 Women’s Rugby League State of Origin on June 18.

The former Texas State School student pulled on the famous #6 Maroon jersey for the first time at North Sydney Oval, completing a journey that began on our local fields.
Mia played an important role in Queensland’s victory, producing one of the game’s key moments just before halftime.
With the Maroons trailing, she delivered a perfect pass to back-rower Deleni Paitai, who crashed over for a crucial try. The score narrowed the gap to 12-10 and swung the momentum Queensland’s way.
The Maroons dominated the second half and ran away with a 34-12 win to reclaim the Under 19 Women’s State of Origin shield.
For those who have watched Mia on the football field this achievement comes as no surprise.
Having played for Southern Suburbs in Toowoomba, she progressed through the Western Clydesdales pathway before earning a place in the QRL Women’s Premiership in 2025. Her strong form and attacking flair later earned her a move to the powerhouse club Burleigh Bears ahead of the 2026 season.
Queensland selectors quickly took notice, naming Mia in the state’s extended squad in May before rewarding her with a place in the final State of Origin team earlier this month.
From Texas State School to the State of Origin arena, Mia’s story is one of hard work, determination and talent.
And after helping Queensland secure a famous win over New South Wales, there’s no doubt the Texas community will continue cheering her on every step of the way as her rugby league career continues to soar
