Funding from ACCIONA Energia confirmed for new purpose-built community gym at Inglewood

Goondiwindi Regional Council is pleased to confirm $250,000 funding from ACCIONA Energía for the construction of a new, purpose-built community gym at the Inglewood MacIntyre Sports Complex, with work scheduled to begin early in 2026.

The facility will replace the current gym housed in the flood-damaged Inglewood Recreation Centre and will nearly double the original gym’s size.

Designed with community needs in mind, it will feature dedicated storage for junior and senior rugby league, social sports, and other local sporting groups.

This project is a key deliverable of the Inglewood MacIntyre Sports Complex Master Plan, developed through extensive consultation with local residents and community groups.

After the 2021 floods caused major damage to the floors of the Recreation Centre - restoration and necessary upgrade costs estimated at over $890,000 - the community agreed that investment would be better directed toward long-term infrastructure at the Sports Complex.

Mayor of the Goondiwindi Region the Honourable Cr Lawrence Springborg AM said the work has been made significantly more achievable thanks to a $250,000 investment from ACCIONA Energía as part of their commitment to long-term community benefits of the MacIntyre Wind Precinct.

“ACCIONA Energía’s support has made possible a significant long-term, legacy project for the Inglewood community,” Cr Springborg said.

“Their investment will help reduce the overall cost of this project to both Council and the community, while delivering vital infrastructure that will serve Inglewood for generations,” he said. “We thank them for this substantial and meaningful contribution to our region.”

ACCIONA Energía spokesperson, Caroline Pinter echoed the long-term impact of the project.

“We are proud to be a part of the Inglewood community and this legacy project reflects our commitment to supporting local initiatives that will make a real difference in the region well into the future. Just as ACCIONA Energía’s MacIntyre Wind Precinct will generate renewable energy for generations to come, this new gym is a lasting investment in the health, wellbeing and connectedness of the Inglewood community.”

The gym will be built on a section of the existing car park at the Sports Complex and will serve over 90 active gym members while supporting the needs of local sporting groups. Council has appointed a local builder to undertake the project, with completion expected in the first half of 2026.

Cr Kym Skinner holds Council’s portfolio for Education and Lifestyle (including sporting facilities) and said the new gym will be a major milestone for the local community.

“This is a significant investment that reflects what the Inglewood community has told us they need,” Cr Skinner said. “The new facility will not only support local health and fitness but also improve access to modern training spaces and storage for our local clubs.”

While the Recreation Centre once served as a community hub, several other facilities in Inglewood are available for hire for local activities and functions. Usage across all these facilities has declined, with only 16 bookings at the Civic Centre and three casual uses of the Sports Complex’s indoor area in the previous financial year (2023-24).

Council continues to accept expressions of interests for alternative uses of the Recreation Centre.
